A Functional Model for Affordance-Based Agents

چکیده
Today’s mobile artificial agents, such as mobile robots, are based on an object-oriented paradigm. They partition their environment into various objects and act in relation to individual properties of these objects. Such perception and acting is insufficient for goal-directed behavior in dynamic environments, which requires action-relevant information in the form of affordances. Affordances describe action possibilities with respect to a specific agent. In this paper, we propose a functional model for affordance-based agents. This model integrates an adjusted version of the HIPE theory of function and an extended theory of affordances. We demonstrate the applicability of the functional model by relating it to two different cases of mobile robot interaction and outline an affordance-oriented robot architecture.

Affordance-Based Interaction Design for Agent-Based Simulation Models
When designing and implementing an Agent-Based Simulation model a major challenge is to formulate the interactions between agents and between agents and their environment. In this contribution we present an approach for capturing agent-environment interactions based on the “affordance” concept. Originated in ecological psychology, affordances represent relations between environmental objects an...
متن کاملAn affordance based model for gameplay
This paper presents a formal model for gameplay based upon the affordances available to the player that are linked to game objects. It has been constructed via an extensive analysis of major first-person games 1998-2008, although it is argued it may extend to all diegetic games. Gameplay can be understood as a network of allowed actions, that can be summarised as a small number of archetypal af...
متن کاملFunctional Object Class Detection Based on Learned Affordance Cues
Current approaches to visual object class detection mainly focus on the recognition of basic level categories, such as cars, motorbikes, mugs and bottles. Although these approaches have demonstrated impressive performance in terms of recognition, their restriction to these categories seems inadequate in the context of embodied, cognitive agents. Here, distinguishing objects according to functio...
متن کاملCognitive, physical, sensory, and functional affordances in interaction design
In reaction to Norman’s (1999) essay on misuse of the term affordance in human-computer interaction literature, this article is a concept paper affirming the importance of this powerful concept, reinforcing Norman’s distinctions of terminology, and expanding on the usefulness of the concepts in terms of their application to interaction design and evaluation. We define and use four complementary...
